How to Measure a Room for Flooring

Measure rectangular and irregular rooms accurately before calculating flooring quantities.

Start With a Floor Plan

Sketch the room and divide irregular areas into rectangles. Measure the finished length and width of each section at the floor level.

Calculate Each Section

Multiply length by width for every rectangle, then add the section areas. Measure closets and connected spaces separately so they are not missed.

Record Openings and Trim

Door openings usually do not reduce flooring area, but they matter when estimating baseboards and transitions.
